Super Regional 1 champs: Coreno’s title, 8 national qualifiers highlight Gannon’s team championship
Nick Coreno’s (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) title at 165 pounds and Gannon’s team championship highlighted a big day for the GU men’s wrestling team at Super Regional 1.
Coreno placed first to lead a group of eight national qualifiers who finished among the Top 3 in the super regional on Saturday at Kutztown’s Keystone Arena.
Coreno will make the trip to the NCAA Division II Championships on March 15-16 in Park City, Kan., joined by teammates Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) (second place at 125 pounds),
Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) (third at 133), Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (third at 149), Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) (second at 157), Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) (second at 174), Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) (second at 184), and Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City) (second at 285).
In the process, first-year head coach Tom Boyd‘s Gannon squad claimed the team title in a remarkably close race. Gannon finished with 145 team points, edging powerhouse Pitt-Johnstown (144.5) by half a point. UPJ had edged Gannon for the Super Regional 1 team title each of the past two seasons as GU settled for second place.
Letter from Coach Boyd
Dear Golden Knight Wrestling Club, Alumni, Family and Friends,
Our program continues to strive for greatness, and I am proud of what we have accomplished so far. Our program has finished in the top ten for the past three consecutive years and we have had multiple All-Americans. With our commitment to excellence, we will continue our climb.
The GKWC is under the leadership of Scott Boyd, David Mosinski, Todd Proper and Ryan Marovich whose aim is to raise funding and increase support for staff, facilities, and scholarship.
We have a dedicated coaching staff and continue to be innovative in all areas of the sport of wrestling. Gehrig Hutchison, Zack Schafer, Jared Merritt, and Rocco Wellek round out our coaching staff with the focus on building a strong athlete and team to become a National Championship team.
The legacy of our program under the former leadership of Don Henry, has built a strong foundation to grow.
We continue to set high goals for our program. And as we chase perfection, we keep in mind our goal to help student-athletes improve their academic and athletic success on and off the mat. Our club will also serve the community by providing instruction for local youth and high school wrestlers to help improve their skills and develop them into great wrestlers.
I encourage you to join our Golden Knight family by providing support to our GKWC. Please share amongst your family and friends too so that our program can benefit and grow in the future. And remember our philosophy of Humble, Hungry and Smart and Don’t Give Up the Ship as we chase perfection and journey towards a National Championship.
Thank you for your continued support!
Coach Boyd
